Salat al-Istikhara is the “prayer for seeking guidance.” When a believer faces a decision and is unsure which path is best, this short, beautiful prayer is a way of asking God to guide the heart toward what is good and to turn it away from what is harmful. It is not reserved for major life choices alone; it can be offered for any lawful matter in which you genuinely want God’s help in choosing well.

When should you pray Istikhara?

Istikhara is appropriate whenever you must choose between permissible options and feel uncertain – a job, a journey, a commitment, or any similar decision. It is prayed after you have made a reasonable effort to think the matter through and, where helpful, sought good advice. It can be prayed at almost any time of day, except the times when voluntary prayer is discouraged, and many find the quiet of the night especially suitable.

Understanding the outcome

A common misunderstanding is that Istikhara must produce a dream or a dramatic sign. In reality, the answer most often comes as a gentle easing – circumstances open up, the heart inclines one way, or obstacles appear that steer you elsewhere. Keep the following in mind:

The spirit of the prayer

At its heart, Istikhara is an act of trust. It expresses a believer’s acknowledgement that human knowledge is limited while God’s knowledge is complete, and that true contentment lies in asking Him to choose what is good. Pray it with humility and then move forward with peace, confident that your sincere request for guidance has been heard.
